RollnSmoke Reviews: DREAMS FROM MY FATHER

DREAMS FROM MY FATHER by Barack Obama (Three Rivers, 2004). Obama’s memoir was originally published in 1995 before Obama was a father, a senator or the 44th President of the United States. A publishing advance came as a result of his election as the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review, and the subsequent memoir was written in “the belief that the story of [his] family, and [his] efforts to understand that story, might speak in some way to the fissures of race that have characterized the American experience.” Here Obama is a true story-teller – his memoir is paced like a novel -- so that the tricky business of growing up both black and white as a boy in Indonesia and Hawaii, during his college years at Occidental and throughout his early professional life as a community organizer in Chicago comes alive, and the reader is mesmerized. Intriguing details about his life pepper the story; for example, his nickname among family was “Barry,” and his Kenyan father was not only the first African to graduate form the University of Hawaii but was also granted a scholarship and earned a PhD from Harvard. While Obama doesn’t necessarily emerge as likable – in fact he is often tense, doubtful and defensive -- his writing is true, his tone is unpretentious and his career goals are fresh and un-calculated as he addresses the universal identity question: Where do I belong? 9.5/10

RollnSmoke Reviews: THE MAYTREES

THE MAYTREES by Annie Dillard (Harper Perennial, 2008). Toby Maytree, a Provincetown native and poet, falls in love and marries young, quiet and beautiful Lou. They live for years among friends, straw hats and the sand dunes on Cape Cod, itself a compelling character in its seasonal and shifting landscape. This portrait of an abiding marriage – a varying patchwork of glimpses into a long-lived relationship -- is old school, its words poetic and often formal. When Maytree abruptly runs off with their eccentric friend, Deary, the tone shifts from romance to contempt, the ruminations filled with rationalization and betrayal. When Maytree finally returns to Provincetown after a 20-year silence, the circumstances are nearly scandalous -- manifest in the conflicting feelings that arise in their grown son, Pete -- and reveal Maytree’s self-absorption and Lou’s wise generosity. RollnSmoke Reviews: THE WHITE TIGER

THE WHITE TIGER by Aravind Adiga (Free Press, 2008). A provocative debut novel short-listed for the Man Booker Prize, this is the sardonic, epistolary narrative of a “1/2-baked” Indian from “The Darkness” – the poor countryside of Northern India – who finds his way to big-city-living. Balram is a rising “White Tiger” who keeps a sense of humor in spite of the disease, filth and prohibitive caste system that constantly weigh against him. His struggle to become a driver-servant for an affluent family in Delhi is set against the background of Ghandi-politics and sickening corruption that swirls throughout India. Balram resists his ingrained sense of servitude and refuses to live his life in the Great Indian Rooster Coop and ultimately moves from hunted criminal to pillar of Bangalore Society, treading a fine line between loyalty and betrayal. (9/10).
